Hobie Alter's first catamaran from 1968. Light enough to sail solo and right on your own.
The Hobie 14 was the first sports catamaran ever made. Hobie Alter designed it in 1968, it was a real revolution in water sports, and it still gets the adrenaline going. Its shape is close to the later Hobie 16, and the two share many parts.
It was designed as a una-rig, with just a mainsail. Add a jib and a dolphin striker and a standard 14 becomes a Hobie 14 “Turbo”.
Look for the forward mast and the strongly curved banana hulls. Together they make the boat sensitive to weight fore and aft: sit too far forward and the leeward bow can dig in and pitchpole you.
The 14 is great for younger sailors who want a solo multihull they can hold down without much weight, and for experienced Hobie sailors who want to single-hand and right the boat by themselves when a flying hull goes over too far. Used boats can be found quite cheaply.
